The 2018-2019 season threw the Louisiana Bulldogs a potent curveball, to use a seasonally inappropriate metaphor.

An early injury for senior Derek Richards scrambled coach Matt Smith’s expectations. The team was already young, but it suddenly got a lot younger.

“Coming into the season, I knew that our freshmen would get some playing time but I did not plan on four of them starting on any given night. Derek Richards getting hurt took away 20-plus points a game, so we never really gained those points back consistently,” Smith said.
