Don Hamilton, who has been spearheading Bowling Green’s Bicentennial celebration coming up this year, from June 27 to July 1, said a brief conversation with Julia Mack at the Super 8 Motel, started a new search for a photo of Bowling Green founder John Basye.
Hamilton said he was making reservations for members of the Missouri National Guard Band at the motel when he mentioned the difficulty of finding a photo or painting of Basye. Even queries to his family were met with a lot of shrugs, as no one seemed to have an image of their ancestor.
Mack told Hamilton that local resident John Hayley was a history buff and probably could locate something on Basye. Going through one of the ancestry sites, Hamilton said Hayley was able to locate a photo of a John Basye from the years 1840 – 1845.
“All the information lined up just right,” Hamilton said. He’s working on having wooden nickels made for the Bicentennial celebration and wants to put Basye’s image on one side of the “coin.”
He also noted that planning for the events over the four-day celebration has really picked up speed. He was excited for all that was to come, he added, because during the Sesquicentennial celebration, he was in high school and could remember how much fun everyone had back then.
