CLARKSVILLE – The sounds of ecstatic shouts and banging drums echoed off the walls of the Apple Shed in Clarksville Sunday.

The noise was produced by a team of performers from St. Louis Osuwa Taiko, practicioners of a Japanese drumming style — and, later, by attendees who were given a brief introduction to their techniques.

St. Louis Osuwa Taiko was founded by Daihachi Oguchi. Oguchi applied his training as a jazz musician with traditional Japanese drumming to establish the original Osuwa Daiko in Suwa, Japan, in 1951. Oguchi travelled to St. Louis, Suwa’s sister city, in 1986, where he donated a set of drums and launched the group. Those drums were deployed at Sunday’s performance.

The event was sponsored by Raintree Arts Council.
