Carol B. was born Jan. 15, 1938, in Mexico, Mo., the daughter of Clancy and Zelda Gibbs Fitzsimmons. The family lived in Mexico until they moved to Bowling Green in 1940. Carol attended Bowling Green schools from where she graduated in 1956. While there, she participated in basketball, volleyball, pep squad, and various activities. After graduation, Carol worked for several businesses including Elder Garment Factory, Community State Bank and the Moon Winx Café. She would often say that waitressing at the café was the hardest job she ever held. On Feb. 15, 1959, she married John Thomas Lovell at the Second Baptist Church in Bowling Green. The couple resided in Bowling Green and St. Joseph, Mo., before moving to Silex in 1966 where she remained until his death. To this union of 65 years, four daughters were born, making the family complete.
Carol worked part time at the Silex Banking Company but spent most of her time raising her family and helping others. She cared for her mother and her mother-in-law when they were ill, along with helping countless others in need. She was active in Khoury League as a board member where she helped with many fundraisers. She enjoyed reading, traveling, riding around the farm in the gator with John after retirement, working her vegetable garden and canning. Carol was known for being a great cook, passing her culinary talents and family recipes to her daughters. Her dining table was the destination for many family holidays and other occasions. While she enjoyed attending St. Louis Cardinals, St. Louis Rams and Phoenix Suns games, her greatest joy was traveling around the state of Missouri to watch her children and grandchildren play sports. Carol loved her grandchildren dearly and having them visit always brightened her day. She enjoyed meeting and holding her four great grandchildren over these last three years.
Survivors include her children, Nancy Arnold (Dave) of Wildwood, Lisa Law of Iberia, Joni Lovell of Fenton, and Vonda Sorrentino (Pat) of St. Louis; grandchildren: Jack Thomas Sorrentino, Nicholas Beall Sorrentino (Ally), Michael Caesar Sorrentino, Rachel Nicole Arnold Roth (Max), Marley Michelle Law Simpson (Cory), and Kelbey Karol Law York (Dalton); great grandchildren: Clara York, Quinn Simpson, Lilian “Lily” Roth and Henry “Hank” Sorrentino; sisters-in-law, Barbara Fitzsimmons of Bedford, Texas and JoAnn Fitzsimmons of Scottsdale, Arizona; brother-in-law Paul Lovell (Lucy) of Silex; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family. Carol and John were cared for these last few months by Abby Ford and Barbara Archer who were like part of the family.
Carol’s husband, John, died on Oct. 8, 2024. Her parents; brothers, Orland Fitzsimmons, Lowell “Cotton” Fitzsimmons; sister Joanne Johnson; and brother-in-law Fred Johnson, also died earlier.
